For those of you who don’t know, I’ve been sending out daily newsletters each day of December with exclusive interviews with some of my favourite bloggers.
This week I asked one of the first ladies I connected with online, Casey Wiegand, to share some of her thoughts on this weeks’ theme – Joy!
Here’s what she had to say in response to this passage and one of the reflection questions from We Will Wait.
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
Why are we instructed to consider trials “pure joy”?
I could have guessed this would be my verse because it has been somewhat of a theme in my life over the past eight years. Just this week I had two pretty significant life trials and I too clung to this verse. I once heard John Piper say, “what is 80 years of suffering when you know you have a lifetime in paradise?” The truth is the suffering, the hard times, the heartache… it all makes us softer, humble, moldable…. it makes us better if we let it. I am not the same girl I was at 22. I can say that loss and heartache and struggle have given me a kingdom perspective and a faith that is nothing like what I had before. And that is what it’s all about! Finding that joy and that hope through those trials is what gets us to the other side.
