Tip #1 : The “Unload List”

We dreamers have a tenancy to think and brainstorm a lot.  And when the gears start turning – you’d better watch out cuz they move fast.  And if you’re anything like me, you may do a lot of your thinking at the most inopportune time of the day, right before bed.  For some reason as I lay down at the end of the day, my brain often kicks into overdrive and the ideas start rolling.

 Often this is a really bad time to be doing this sort of thinking because its time to rest.  And if we aren’t getting rest, we won’t be able to accomplish all the ideas we have anyways.  So what do you do with all this pre-bedtime angst?

Write an unload list.

An unload list is exactly what is sounds like.  It’s a brain-dump.  A chance to write down all the things rolling around in your head without feeling like you’ll lose any nuggets of goodness.

I think of it like the machine gold-diggers use called the “shaker”.  This beast of a machine is where they dump huge loads of rock, gravel and sand onto a conveyer belt and the whole machine shakes wildly.  As the debris goes down the belt, everything is washed off and all the useless stuff is dumped – leaving behind the goods – flakes of gold.

Sometimes all the crazy ideas in our heads are like those boulders and useless rocks, but if we don’t have a place to dump it all – an unload list – we feel like me might miss the nuggets of gold that are hidden amongst the debris.

So give yourself a break and just write it down.  Keep a pad of paper and pen beside your bed.  Or you can nail a whiteboard up to your wall to write your unload list on.

Before you crawl into bed each night, or even after you’ve turned the lights off and your brain starts churning, get up, take 5 minutes and unload it.  Write down ideas, to do lists, people you want to contact, places you want to go, marketing ideas, plans for new projects.  Whatever it is that’s rolling around in your brain.

And after it’s written down, leave it for today.  Turn of the lights and know that none of the gold has been lost.  It’s all on that unload list – the shaker which can help you sift through the crap to find the goods, tomorrow.  Tomorrow when your mind is refreshed and your perspective restored.

So that’s tip #1!  The Unload List.

Just take a load off, dreamers and get some rest.  Your list will be waiting for you in the morning.

  1. I started doing this before even reading your post (ironically?)! I bought a new notepad to stick in my purse and carry with me everywhere. Shall we say, “great minds think alike…”? Looking forward to seeing more of your tips!

  2. Hi Heather! I just found your blog from Finding Beauty in the Ordinary. I’m definitely going to have to read all the tips in this series! This is a great tip. My brain goes crazy when I lay down to go to bed! I always think of new ideas and am worried I’ll forget them by morning. But the unload list is such a good idea! I’m definitely going to have to try this out!
