Day 3: Invite Him In

day3

John 10:1-2 “Anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber.  The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.”

Friends, I truly believe hearing God’s voice is possible and maybe easier than we think. He loves us and wants to speak to us. He does not want to hide himself or his will from us. But our Lord is also a gentleman. He doesn’t push His way into our lives, yelling and screaming for us to pay attention.

He knocks. He waits. He enters through the gate.

The Lord is always trying to communicate with us in all kinds of ways. Some of the ways we might be most familiar with are:

  • God’s word
  • Preachers and Teachers
  • Music
  • Creation

Some of the less familiar ways are:

  • Dreams
  • Visions
  • Signs/Life Events

Over the next 31 days we’re going to explore each of these ways and more. But today let’s look at what all these different forms of communication have in common.

They all require invitation.

If we don’t open ourselves up to hearing what God has to say, if we don’t create space in our lives and in our hearts, we’re going to miss Him. He enters through the gate when we invite Him in. And His voice doesn’t always come in the ways we expect. Just look at this verse:

The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.” –1 Kings 19: 11-13

Take a moment and think about the last time you heard God speak. Was it in the way you were expecting or was it something of a surprise?

This past weekend I listened to speaker Lara Casey share at the Influence Conference, and through her words God spoke to me. But it wasn’t at all in the way I was expecting.

As she introduced her topic, my daughter Claire bounced on my lap. Lara began speaking about goal setting and how to make our dreams come true, and Claire smiled up at me, jumping up and down and squealing with delight. And then Lara said, “Your dream might be staring you right in the face.”

In that moment, God spoke to me, quite literally, through her figurative words.

My dream was staring directly in the face.

“…and after the fire came a gentle whisper.”

So why not take a moment right now and invite God to speak to you. Ask Him to increase your awareness of presence and sensitivity to His voice.

  1. I love that you emphasize the need on our part to listen in order to hear from God. It’s so easy to rush through life and miss these divine moments where the Lord is wanting to speak to us. I know that I am way too quick to fill my time with things other than sitting and listening to the Lord. Thanks for the reminder!
